What Is Endodontics Dentistry?
Endodontics is the discipline of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the roots of your teeth. Specialists in this discipline are responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periapical infections and diseases related to dental pulp. They are particularly authorized to perform root canal treatment, also called devitalization, when a tooth is infected and can no longer be kept alive.
How is an endodontic consultation carried out?
The consultation aimed at detecting and then treating an endodontic problem takes place in three main phases:
- Diagnostic phase: the specialist examines the tooth and determines the level of infection.
- Preparatory phase: the specialist performs root canal shaping and disinfection of the tooth root.
- Root canal filling phase: the specialist fills the root canal system. This step makes it possible to sustain the results of the disinfection.
What does endodontic treatment consist of?
Endodontic treatment is a complex operation which requires real know-how. It consists of :
- Remove the remains of infected living tissue from the dental pulp.
- Prepare the interior of the canals using files using a manual or mechanical technique.
- Disinfect the inside of the ducts using sodium hypochlorite.
- Dry the root canal system.
- Fill the root canal with cold or heated gutta-percha.
Before treating endodontics, the dental surgeon usually performs local anesthesia.
When to see an endodentist?
A specialist consultation is necessary when the pulp of your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. The causes of infection or inflammation can be multiple: deep decay, tooth fracture, crack, repeated treatments on the same tooth, etc.
In some cases, the inflamed or infected pulp may not show any visible signs. So don’t hesitate to consult your dentist for a first diagnosis.
